Music News
First off, two new albums, both on alive/naturalsound records:
1) 'The Nerves Live At Pirates Cove, 1977,' a vinyl only collection from a tape Jack Lee had hidden away somewhere. To be frank, something about this makes it seem to be for fanatics only, (who want to have all the Nerves songs available. There are some previously unreleased numbers here.)
and 2) The Breakaways-Walking Out On Love-(the lost sessions) which is on CD, digital download, and vinyl. I like this one much better, I found it to be a fun listen, all from tapes I didn't know existed anymore. It's Paul and I, with our new band, right after leaving the Nerves in 1978. I think you can check this out at their website. I especially like 'House On The Hill' and 'Little Suzy' which I swear, woulda been a killer Bomp single in '78, but oh well, better late than never, I'm tickled about this one, it's fun to have a surprise record pop up, and from so far back!
The Songwriters' Workshop is set to start again, (after a forced year layoff) in early January, 2010, at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. Info is available at 310 828 4497, or check the McCabe's website.
My return to McCabe's as a performer is set for December 4. This is the long postponed 'petercase 25th anniversary show.' Tickets are already on sale. 310 828 4497.
I'm gearing up for a couple of recording projects that will commence in the next month or so.
Also, a 'Plimsouls Live From The Whisky, 1982' is planned for February release on Alive. The tapes are high quality, from a radio broadcast, mixed from 24 track tape, and with a hometown Halloween night crowd going nuts. More news on this soon.
That's the latest. All the best, gang! love, Peter

this is all good stuff, pc ... i'm very happy that you're getting back into the mix etc ... eagerly await your return to the east coast ...
say, is that book about blind willie worth reading? ... i remember you talking about it a while ago and saw it in the library ... can't decide whether it's worth my time ...
all angelenos: what can you guys tell me about cal state university (LA)? ... my 17 year old just applied to go there ... i lived in LA in the 90s for a little while ... but i don't know that area at all ... my pal andrew said there's good chinese food around there ... what say ye?
i really love that plimsouls one night in america thing (much more than the studio stuff actually) ... so i can't wait to get the 1982 show ... but for now: gotta get the breakways ... maybe ttc can give us his impressions of the project ...
did you guys see the new tarantino movie ... i loved it ... what a howl ... brad pitt is a gas ...
how about tom russell on letterman? ... pretty good, i guess ... i'm trying not to be mean and negative ... my mom told me that if i don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all ... what a bore!

Ackles I was in the studio last night and one of the guys there is head of admissions at CSLA. He said due to no funds being available they are accepting no out of state students, no transfers and no returning student that have taken time off. They will take the applications but will accept local california students first and even then the numbers they will enroll will be less than normal.
I believe I was at that Holloween show... Did Phreddie open? I can't recall what I recall anymore

shit, buddy, i shoulda checked with you guys before i dropped the $55 application fee ... and brandon is no kind of student ... sounds like this one won't be happening ...

Ackles I hope his statement was wrong but we were covering the same subject because my 19 year old was hoping to transfer there next fall and he's assisted other friends get their kids in when admissions had already been completed. With the budget freeze its no dice now according to him.
best of luck on a break

Michael Grey's Willie McTell book is ok if you are really a fan, like I am, and need any information you can get. There is a lot of good information in the book, but it is quite buried in the tale of the author's trip through the South, and you have to hear at length about Grey's sensibilities being offended by American manners, etc... for example, the difficulty of getting a glass of wine with dinner at a restaurant in Georgia; or how the Americans are all obsesssed with these things called 'counties.' Maybe these passages have been edited out for the US edition?( I read it a few years back, in the UK version.) Anyhow, some of it's interesting, and strong, like his descriptions and outrage at the world McTell had to live in (as an American black man) , and the remnants of yesterdays horrors in the contemporary world.
There are some great insightful passages about McTell. Read if you need to.
Have you read 'The World Don't Owe Me Nothin.' by Honeyboy Edwards? You gotta read that one...

thanks, buddy, good luck to you guys too ... this college thing is crazy ... brandon's got his heart set on california (he's a really fine skateboarder) ... the other night he showed me the loyola marymount website ... check it out: $52,000 tuition per year + $12,000 per year = what the fuck? ... i mean, i have made millions off the last donuts record ... but still!
PC: i don't know much about blind willie ... but i loved listening to RJ while i read 'love in vain' ... and reading robert gordon's muddy book while listening to the stovall plantation, chess, and woodstock albums was also great ... but i think i'll hold off on the willie book ... i have that bob dylan encylopedia and grey comes off like a real fuck-nut through much of that ...
i'm gonna see if i can find that honeyboy book in the free library's dusty stacks ...
the world does owe me something! ... a pot of glue ...

Your college-bound son might want to consider Santa Monica College, a community college in the state higher ed system that comprises the UCs, the Cal States, and several score community colleges, of which SMC is the jewel: It takes a lot of out-of-sttate and international students, and serves as a successful launching pad for transfer to 4-year institutions, including an impressive # to the very selective UCLA. I
Its academic offerings range from the conventional community college fare to quite demanding honors programs, and is a great place for the not-sterling student with potential to get into the academic groove and , if motivated, to move on up the academic food chain. Its Scholars Program is a sort of honors college-within-a-college offering an academically rigorous program designed for transfer prep. And the regular courses and tracks are fine.
And it's a bargain! -- even the out-of-state per-credit fees are a steal; and they're fully transferable to institutions such as UCLA.

I'm surprised to hear the scoop on Cal State not being able to offer admissions to out-of-state and transfer students at present. Ordinarily institutions up their acceptance of out-of-staters and international students -- precisely in order to capture the higher freight they pay. But California's budgetary implosion is staggering and we have already gotten into the habit of eating our seed corn. I can vouch that SMC at least is sturdy and will weather the budgetary storm: do check it out!
The college chase *is* crazy; my darling niece is in the throes of it. Good luck!

If it's just the skateboard thing, then he might want to consider Florida colleges as well. If he's dead set on CA - my condolences. Cue O'Jays '...Money, Money, Money, Money...' Of course you lawyer-types are rich, so no worries...;-)

pc - I'm holding out for the new pc. 'Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John' is one of your best - and that's saying something. Anyone who has heard 'Ain't Gonna Worry No More' knows the Grammy belonged to you.

yea, i'm rolling in it, gary ... the kid does really want to go to CA ... maybe i'll make him listen to 'green blankets' ... or 'do re me' ... two of the best songs about the california 'dream' ...
genise: thanks so much ... i'm gonna look into santa monica community ... sounds like a good place ...

SMC... very near McCabe's and the 'Pico Strip.' An excellent part of the world, no joke.

And of course, a stones throw from 'Dogtown!'
Posted By pc / Posted At 10/9/09 1:18 PM
if he is really just coming out to skate then Santa Monica City College is the place to be. Like PC said Dogtown is it's backyard.

All true! If you come out for a campus visit on the 1st weekend of December, you can come out to PC's Big Shoe on Sat the 4th, and the whole Westside/LA fan contingent can say hi. (K and I have just snagged tix -- glad you're feeling up to it Peter; we can't wait!).

New Live Plimsouls. Three words I like to see/hear. Can't wait...

I had to chime in on the college kid situation. The junior College suggestion was a good one and there are plenty others besides Santa Monica where he could live less expensively. Pasadena City is a good one, Rio Hondo etc. If a four year college seems to be the route you want to choose(For my surfer son,(not the most dedicated student) I knew he needed to get right into a four year school to get on track and stay on track)There is a Cal State who are not having to implement the same kind of entrance denials. That is Cal State Channel Islands. That's in Camarillo, very close to Oxnard and Ventura both beach cities, and near L.A. and Santa Barbara. It's a relatively new Cal State so they haven't hit their enrollment quotas yet. Hey what skater boy doesn't want to say he goes to school at C-SUCI(said sucky)
